actually wanted to become a cellist. But since his brother had already chosen this instrument and a viola was available at the school, he chose this path. Küssner studied with Jürgen Kussmaul in Düsseldorf, with Kim Kashkashian in New York and with Michael Tree in St. Louis. After graduation, he was a member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for two years before joining the Berlin Philharmonic in 1989. His pronounced love of chamber music has since led him to participate in several smaller formations, such as the Philharmonic String Sextet, the Philharmonic Stradivari Soloists Berlin and the Athenaeum Quartet. In addition, the passionate chess and skat player takes care of the archival history of the orchestra. Walter Küssner has been a member of the Berlin Baroque Soloists since 2003.
